Mostly because I've been more focused on getting a new job than on keeping up with my blog, but also because I didn't have much to say.
But I should be back on a fairly regular schedule. I was browsing reddit a day or so ago, and came across some comments about what to put into your care packages for the soldiers in your life. I don't have many readers, but I figured I would share some of what soldiers mentioned they preferred to receive:

Fruit Snacks

Pretty much any kind of snack item

Flavored drink powders for your soldier to put in his water so it's more enjoyable.

Good Toilet Paper (Think Charmin Ultra Strong and Ultra Soft) The Standard Issue stuff sucks.

Wet wipes (but not WetOnes. They're anti-bacterial and can be harsh on the skin, not something you want to experience after wearing your clothes for hours on end after using one. One soldier mentioned after using it it felt like fire ants were crawling over him) Baby wipes with aloe are best, since they're gentle on the skin.

Tobacco. Both chewing and smoke variety. Even if your soldier doesn't smoke or chew, tobacco is great for bartering.

Hot sauce

Meat seasoning in powdered form

Other food condiments that can travel well.

Gum

Aleve (Not Tylenol)

Vitamin B5, Vitamin C and Carotene Pills

If he has access to a gym, send them nutritional supplements (protein powder and the like)

Little bits of home that they might like. One guy even suggested a small jar of American Soil

Magazines (like the glossy paper kind) However, be careful with this one-- if they're serving in Islamic nations, avoid porn, even things like GQ or Maxim count as porn.

Also, if in an Islamic nation, avoid sending pork products.

socks

Mouthwash

Pots and pans

Electric fly swatters

Morale patches

gag items are also enjoyed.

Ken Levine isn't going to help fund Zach Braff's new movie, but not because he doesn't like the guy. It's because Braff is famous and has the connections necessary to get this movie funded, where as people who aren't known in the industry, that you've never heard of, don't have these connections.

I'm torn on the issue. On the one hand, I agree that Kickstarter's purpose is for people who don't have clout to help give them a leg up in the industry (Whichever industry they're trying to get into). This also comes across to me that Braff is simply being lazy. Why do the hard work which is involved in getting a movie made when you can just make a post and have your fans fund you themselves?

On the other hand, there's nothing in Kickstarter's ToS which states that well known people can't do this. And if people want to fund Braff, then it's none of my concern. Is Braff being lazy? Yes. Would I do the same thing in his place? Yes.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-42296751725822943072013-04-25T01:34:00.004-04:002013-04-25T01:34:53.190-04:00George Bush Was Smarter than You
I came across this article on reddit's /r/conservative. I'm not happy with large amounts of my life, and I'm not sure how to change them. I left Grand Rapids a few years back, not because I wanted to, but because circumstances demanded it. I'm hopefully headed back there within the next month or two.

It will be nice to see old friends again, and to get back into swing dancing, which I've sorely missed. It's funny, when I lived in Michigan, I couldn't wait to leave. I hated it in that state, but then I found Grand Rapids, and the city sort of sneaks up on you, and you find yourself loving the city.

My soul will always be down South, but a part of me has adopted Grand Rapids as my home town.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-5492827589441104912013-01-31T17:21:00.001-05:002013-01-31T17:21:23.765-05:00Paperman - Full Animated Short FilmThis is a short film created by the Disney Animation team, and they made it using both illustration and computer animation. Usually, it goes into Christmas day, and then I sleep in Christmas Day, and it's wonderful.

1. Die Hard and Die harder
What more could you want from a Christmas movie? It's got action, suspense, drama, and comedy. It's got Bruce Willis kicking ass, and he takes down the bad guy at the end.

2. It's a Wonderful Life
I actually hated this movie when I was younger. I ended up getting dragged to see it my first year in college, and I loved it. I think it was seeing his genuine joy towards the end of the film, when he realized just how bad things could have turned out.

3. The Santa Clause trilogy
I think I like this series, not only because I like Tim Allen, but also because this a movie specifically about Santa himself, rather than someone else's interaction with him.

4. Ernest Saves Christmas
I've loved Ernest since I was a kid, and the nostalgia just never wore off. I love the style of comedy they use throughout the film, and it's just got a fun message to go with it.

5. Elf
I normally don't like Will Ferrel movies, with only a few exceptions. I think this one is my favorite of his, as it plays to his comedic strengths.

Of these, I always make certain to watch the first Die Hard, It's a Wonderful Life, and either the First Santa Clause Movie or Elf, if I can't fit in all of them.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-75864660395561377132012-11-03T17:32:00.002-04:002012-11-03T17:32:20.372-04:00Disney buys Star WarsSo, if you've been living under a rock recently, then you weren't aware that Disney bought the rights to Star Wars. And frankly, if the first you're finding out about this is via my blog, then I'll be really surprised.

Now, personally, I enjoyed the first three movies that came out, and I'm of the opinion that the second three are utter pieces of crap, so I can't imagine Disney doing much worse of a job than Lucas has been doing lately. I do think it's sort of odd that Leia is now a Disney princess, but she's a much better addition than some of the other additions.

The other big piece of news is that they've also announced 7-9, so it'll be interesting to see where they go with that, and whether or not they recast the roles, or try to bring back the old cast.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-37981410574320108882012-10-26T10:17:00.001-04:002012-10-26T10:17:27.305-04:00A Fun WebsiteWhile browsing reddit this morning, someone linked to an interesting website called Globe Genie. What it does is use Google Map's Street View feature. However, instead of you picking, it randomly teleports you around the world. Some of the views are amazing.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-54270641809759205232012-10-02T01:54:00.000-04:002012-10-02T01:54:00.470-04:00On MarriageOy. I'm finally settled in enough that I can get around to posting again. Sorry for the intermission, it's been a bit crazy.

I've been hearing a lot about the sanctity of marriage lately. My mom is separating from her husband. I think at some future time I'll finally get around to posting why I refer to him as such, even though he adopted me when I was eleven or twelve. A few years ago, my uncle and his wife were divorced after she disappeared to Indiana. He (my uncle) takes a more conservative christian view on the issue; It's fine that my parents are separating as long as they're both open to reconciliation. So there's that.

But what I want to write about in today's post is on the issue of who can get married. There's been a big fuss made between sides, with one side in favor of the government allowing gay people to marry, and the other side of the coin being to make an amendment so that only a man and a woman can get married. However, both sides are looking at this issue the wrong way.

The issue shouldn't be whether the government should or shouldn't allow certain people to marry each other. The issue is this: Why is the United States Government involved in marriage in the first place? It isn't anyone's business who does or does not get married, except for the people who are getting married. Outside of that, no government has any right to decide what happens between two or more consenting adults provided that their actions don't harm anyone else. Harming someone's sensibilities doesn't count.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-13551712813472435812012-08-26T23:16:00.000-04:002012-08-26T23:16:24.639-04:00Amusing Tabletop Role-Playing Game StoriesI'm still in the middle of packing, but I thought I would share some stories I've come across in reading about various role playing games.

Old Man Henderson

The Tale of Eric and the Dread Gazebo

It was built because a lot of people want to skip stones, but they don't always live near a source of water which allows for this desire.

The next site features an ascii face, and the eyes follow your mouse around. However, if you should click on the face, and hold the mouse button down, you'll be in for a nice treat. The longer you hold it down, the better it gets.

This next website takes you to a place where people have set it up so you can see what they're doing, as well as turn their lights on and off. It's fairly interesting, the camera is controllable, and their cars also broadcast if they're on the move, so you can see what they're seeing.

And finally, one of the stranger sites I've come across lately. It features He-Man singing What's Up? on loop. That's all there is to it. I'm not really sure why it was created, but it's hard not to watch the whole thing.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-4361403640204913902012-07-02T11:53:00.004-04:002012-07-02T12:00:18.255-04:00PasswordsBlogfather Harvey over at BadExample recently made a post linking to a video about the frustration which some websites put you through in order to signup or change your password. This reminded me of a couple of comics I've seen floating around the internet. The first one is called Password Validation which is from Popstrip, and I think adequately details the frustration of choosing a password on some of the more idiotic websites. The second comes from xkcd and is titled Password Strength. I've placed the image of the xkcd below, for the lazy. It details that the passwords those websites make you choose really aren't as secure as you might think, though they are hard to remember.
Also, if you have the technology to allow someone to walk out of a person's screen, you really should be marketing this product to the military, as I'm sure they could find a much better use for it than I could.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-86515303738906977312012-06-17T11:00:00.002-04:002012-06-17T11:00:45.321-04:00It's MagicalFor a magical experience, all you have to do is click on the picture after fallowing the link:

http://www.drawball.com/lolz/Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-31004454653249705382012-06-09T00:45:00.002-04:002012-06-09T00:45:15.824-04:00Click and Clack: End of an Era.With Car Talk coming up on 25 years running, Click and Clack have decided to retire. They'll continue broadcasting new shows until October, and then after that, it'll be reruns/best of shows. It's weird to think that, for all but 4 years of my life, these guys have been hosting a great radio show. I think it's one of the few that could have survived on regular radio, and one of the few shows on NPR that have allowed it to stay on air (well, other than government funding, but that's a topic for someone else to cover.

I've always enjoyed their show, and I will miss not having new episodes to look forward to in the future.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-22246238644123623272012-06-05T10:27:00.001-04:002012-06-05T10:27:11.091-04:00David Copperfield on Reddit
Last night, David Copperfield appeared on Reddit to answer questions from the Reddit community. /r/IAMA is one of my favorite subreddits, as many celebrities make an appearance there. Tenacious D's AMA (Ask Me Anything) was a different experience for me, as, in edition to typing out their answers, they also answered via audio. Below, I've included some of my favorite answers from the session with David. For the rest, go check out the site.
What is your favorite illusion? Where did you learn it? How do you perform it?

DCopperfield:
One of my favorite illusions is Flying. It's a dream anyone can relate to. All of these illusions take many years to develop. A lot of trial and error. Sometimes we have to change paths totally, but eventually, usually, we succeed.
The flying illusion took SEVEN years to develop - to make it really credible. I wanted to make it feel real: levitating inside a plexiglass box, levitating through hoops, flying while holding a woman from the audience.
What was the first effect you ever performed, or the first you performed with some regularity and can remember?

DCopperfield:
The first trick I bought at Macy's was a little wooden board where a quarter would appear and disappear. It took quite a bit of skill and practice - I worked so hard on that thing!
What's your biggest embarrassing moment on stage? Illusion or otherwise.

DCopperfield:
I've embarrassed myself so many times. About a week ago, I threw a frisbee into the audience to find a randomly selected person. A guy caught it and I told him to stand up. He was reluctant. I thought he was just shy. I encouraged him to stand up - please, stand up! Come on!
I then realized that he was disabled, and I felt absolutely horrible. I apologized profusely and I ran to him, he smiled, I hugged him, and he understood. So yeah - that was embarrassing.
Do you have any pre-show rituals?

DCopperfield:
I brush my teeth with a Sonicare toothbrush before every show.
What's the most magical thing you own?
An island. ;)
Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-59680488705258548242012-05-31T16:57:00.000-04:002012-05-31T16:59:15.887-04:00Zelda: The MusicalI found this on YouTube, and it was good enough that it warranted sharing:
I laughed throughout, found it an enjoyable movie. Nothing really ground breaking, but Josh Brolin really captured a young Agent K, even sounded like him, I look forward to seeing more films with him in it. One note, if you go see it in theaters, save your money and don't bother with 3D.Andrew Phulehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13852165812561669705noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7624977554799216806.post-61443084716344170302012-05-18T15:10:00.002-04:002012-05-18T15:10:38.484-04:00The Mageborn Series
Great book series. First book had some mild formatting issues, however he's fixed those in the second and third books.

I've enjoyed reading the first two books. The third book just came out, and I'm reading through it now. Mordecai's parents are attacked when he's an infant. His father killed, and his mother mortally wounded. She manages to escape with their child, but knowing that she's dying, she leaves him in the care of a blacksmith and his wife, who being unable to have children, raise him as their own child at the dying mother's request. The story picks up again with Mordecai as a young adult, shortly before he discovers the gift he inherited from his father's side.

The first book is free right now, and the other two are worth the price:
